Visiting Electives

The School of Medicine welcomes applications for Electives by visiting students from medical schools both in the UK and abroad.  These electives will involve being attached to a named consultant in one of the hospitals of the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust either Leeds General Infirmary (LGI), St James or Chapel Allerton .

Visiting Elective students will be encouraged to observe, and where appropriate contribute to, the clinical activities undertaken by their supervising consultant and his or her team. No formal teaching will be provided.

Electives are only now available in four week blocks as follows;

3rd June 2019 - 28th June 2019

1st July 2019 - 26th July 2019

29th July - 23rd August 2019

Six week elective may be available upon request.

Electives are only available in one speciality and cannot be split.

Please note that due to limited spaces, only one placement is allowed at Leeds.

The application process will be open for one month only (January 2019) and late applications will not be accepted.

The application process is as follows:

1. Complete the online application form and upload documents as requested (found in the application process on the left).

When you have satisfactorily completed the above.

2. In February 2019 a list of specialties will be made available for students to sign up to and will based on a first come first served basis.

Erasmus and Erasmus +

We are not able to enter into and sign Erasmus or Erasmus+ agreements, as we are not fully able to guarantee meeting the requirements. Nor are we able to offer internships or placements of more than six weeks in duration. 

Visa information

Immigration rules for short term study were changed with effect from 11th January 2018 to allow those doing medical electives in the UK to come via the short-term study visa route instead of Tier 4.

The relevant UKVI guidance gives further details about the requirements that have to be met.

English language requirement

Students must ensure that they have an English IELTS certification with an overall score of 7.00 and at least 6.5 in the speaking component (or equivalent in TOEFL, Pearson, Cambridge advanced or Trinity College)

There is no charge for these electives and students will not receive any payment
