Summary: Adult, Child and Mental Health Nursing
Location: Baines Wing
Within the School of Healthcare I am the Head of School. I also lead the School research in the prevention and management of chronic wounds, working closely with the University of Leeds Trials Unit and colleagues in the NHS. The majority of wounds heal without complication, but those that fail to heal, so called chronic wounds, cause significant morbidity and make a substantial impact on the provision of health services.
The most important chronic wounds, from a public health perspective, are leg ulcers, foot ulcers and pressure ulcers. We conduct high quality primary research in the diagnosis, prevention, management, assessment of risk, and experience of chronic wounds and their complications.
We also undertake systematic reviews of the evidence in this area, and work in knowledge translation, for example the compilation of clinical practice guidelines, and Clinical Evidence summaries so that care providers, and commissioners are able to make clinical and purchasing decisions based on reliable evidence.
I am a member of the Health Technology Assessment Commissioning Board, and an Editor of the Cochrane Wounds Group. I contribute to a number of journals as editorial board member or reviewer.
In addition, I referee grant proposals and final reports for National and International research funders. I have supervised numerous Masters projects, seen five PhD students to completion (Abadi, Al-Khaburi, Fleurence, Muwanguzi and Peckham), and currently have 4 students working on PhDs.
Within the University I am an elected member of the Research and Innovation Board.
