Funding Routes For Undergraduate & Postgraduate Intercalation
The timing of an intercalating year affects where the funding comes from and whether there is funding available for postgraduate study.
Student Finance England (SFE) supports the first 4 years of eligible study for English students this includes the first three years of the MBChB and either Bradford Clinical Sciences or undergraduate Intercalation; 1 additional year of SFE funding can also be used in addition to the 4 years to support to support repeat study. The NHS pays tuition fees and maintenance in fifth and subsequent years of study which can include an Intercalating year, years 4 and 5 of the MBChB or a repeat year. Students cannot receive any undergraduate funding from SFE for postgraduate study except Disability Student Allowance if this already received. The PGL is available for Intercalation at Masters Level but not cover the whole cost of study.
Links at the bottom of this page outline the general rules for English students intercalating at different time points; these rules maybe affected if you have had to retake a year. Please note that Welsh students have a similar system to English students, N Ireland & Scotland have their own system therefore it is important that you contact Funding for more information if your pathway is not shown below. There is no centralised funding for International students.
