Wasif was part of the first cohort of Reach for Excellence (RFE) students.
“I am from a typical working class background and went to a local comprehensive school. I am currently in receipt of the Centenary Alumni Scholarship as well as the Leeds Bursary.
The Reach for Excellence scheme to an extent did influence my choice of university. The summer school in particular gave me a chance to experience the brilliant atmosphere the university possesses. Having most of the Reach for Excellence workshops on the campus was an added bonus, as it made me realise that the
University of Leeds is the place where I want to be.
Reach for Excellence helped me immensely in terms of university preparation. In particular the subject taster sessions which affirmed for me that Medicine was definitely the course I wanted to study and that it was the only course that would allow me to challenge myself and achieve my full potential.
Overall my time at Reach for Excellence was great and it has become a memorable part of my life. All of the staff were great and help was available at every corner, regarding the application process, university life, student finance, etc. It was also very easy to make friends and the scheme gave me an opportunity to meet new people and socialise with people from different backgrounds.
Furthermore, at the moment I am also working for Reach for Excellence as a mentor and as part of my role I have worked on a couple of Reach for Excellence summer schools. Having been part of the scheme as a student, I felt as if it was my moral obligation to give something back to the scheme and what better way than to assist others with their preparations for university.
Overall I am thankful for the chance to help and assist others in the same way as I was helped.”
