Section of Clinical Cancer Research

Led by Professor Chris Twelves

This section focuses its research in several areas, with the common aim of improving outcomes for patients with cancer. The researchers are predominantly clinical academics, who are active across the named Groups.

Research Areas

The Cancer Medicine Group (Twelves) carries out all stages of cancer trials, many with associated translational studies. These include early clinical trials of novel agents and combinations (Twelves, Anthoney, Ralph) focus on hypothesis-driven studies, approaches developed locally and studies with other ECMCs or the Cancer Research UK Drug Development Office. As a priority we are developing our expertise in viral therapeutics and neuro-oncology. Trials are carried out in the NIHR Leeds Clinical Research Facility, many incorporating translational and pharmacology studies. The Section hosts the Cancer Research UK/NIHR Leeds (with Bradford) Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre. Phase III trials are carried out across a wide range of tumour types with an emphasis on melanoma, brain, urological and lung cancers (Mulatero, Short, Vasudev).

The GI Cancer Group (Seymour) has been especially successful in trials of systemic (Seymour) and local (radiotherapy, Sebag-Montefiore; surgery, Jayne) therapies of colorectal cancer (Seymour, Sebag-Montefiore), many incorporating translational molecular pathology or genomic studies.

The Radiation Biology and Therapeutics Group (Sebag-Montefiore) aims to improve patient outcomes using a multidisciplinary research team with expertise ranging from pre-clinical radiation biology through to phase III clinical trials (Sebag-Montefiore). Tumour site interests focus on gastrointestinal and CNS malignancy along with complex radiotherapy techniques.

We have close links to the Clinical Support Team (Lead by Nurse Consultant, Debbie Beirne) of around 50 staff comprising research nurses, clinical trials assistants and administrative staff who support clinical our trial activity; the team also support NHS consultants in the delivery of clinical trials. We also work closely with the Clinical Trials Research Unit (Professor Julia Brown) in the design co-ordination and analysis of clinical trials.
