Loss of control and heavy drinking seminar

On Wednesday 13th June we are pleased to welcome Dr Andrew Jones from the University of Liverpool for our external seminar series.

Loss of control is considered by many theoretical models of addiction to be a key component of heavy drinking and the progression to dependence. However, these assumptions and the research underlying them often paints an over-simplistic view of our control as something that is stable over long periods of time.  My research focuses on the role of internal and environmental factors which might influence our short-term ability to control behaviour and put us ‘at risk’ of heavy drinking. Identification of these factors may i) help to improve our understanding of behavioural control and refine our theoretical predictions, and ii) lead to the development of interventions which might improve our control and subsequently reduce alcohol consumption.
