The effect of intermittent fasting on appetite, energy balance and metabolic health Seminar

On Wednesday 17th October we are pleased to welcome Dr. David Clayton from Nottingham Trent University for our external seminar series.

Abstract

Traditional diet advice to make small reductions in daily energy intake has proven unsuccessful for the majority, with elevated appetite and tedious calorie counting considered major factors undermining diet-induced weight loss efforts. Intermittent fasting is a form of dieting where food is severely restricted for discrete times, with comparable weight loss to daily energy restriction dieting. However, the mechanisms of action for intermittent fasting are poorly understood. These are important, as they will help to determine whether intermittent fasting is a long-term viable alternative to daily energy restriction. During this talk, Dr Clayton will present his research findings on the acute effects of short-term severe energy restriction (mimicking the popular 5:2 diet) on metabolic health, the appetite regulatory system, and components of energy balance, specifically food intake and physical activity energy expenditure.
